A ButiaDub foi formada em 2007 por estudantes de biologia e geologia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul em Porto Alegre com foco na música reggae. O “Butiá” ou butiazeiro (do tupi-guarani: mbutiai = a palmeira; ibati = arvore alta) é uma planta sagrada e símbolo das paisagens nativas do sul da América do Sul. “Dub” é uma levada reggae com elementos psicodélicos onde a banda fez sua escola musical. Foi desse encontro de sons e cores que iniciamos nossa jornada musical inspirados pela diversidade biológica e cultural do Sul do Brasil.

 ButiaDub was created in 2007 by undergraduate students of biology and geology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil, with focus on the reggae music. ‘Butiá’ or butiazeiro (from tupi-guarani: mbutiai = a palm; ibati = high tree) is a sacred plant and a symbol of the native landscapes of southern South America. ‘Dub’ is a reggae style with psychedelic elements where the band made its music school. Through the meeting of this sounds and colors we started our musical journey inspired by the biological and cultural diversity of Southern Brazil. 

Os primeiros anos da banda representaram um mergulho profundo na contracultura universitária, rendendo muitas apresentações em festas e congressos de estudantes. Durante esse período, o grupo se modificou ao longo do tempo, mas o recrutamento de músicos sempre priorizou buscar verdadeiros fãs da black music em geral, buscando formar um reduto fiel do verdadeiro espírito dos Rockers jamaicanos.

The first years of the band represented a deep dive in the university counterculture, with many performances carried out in parties and in students congress. During this period, the group was modified along the time, but the musicians recruitment was always guided looking for real fans of black music, trying to create a faithful redoubt of the true Rockers Jamaican spirit.

O projeto musical amadureceu e se intensificou assumindo novas conformações durante a pesquisa de batidas e suingues, misturando ritmos jamaicanos e brasileiros, dentre outros. Gêneros como a capoeira e o samba, o blues, o jazz, o country e o afrobeat foram misturados com diferentes estilos de reggae criando assim uma busca contínua pelos sons originais da ButiaDub. A concepção da poesia das letras também foi cuidadosamente desenvolvida se tornando um mosaico de experiências sensoriais contrapondo a vivência junto à floresta e sua beleza selvagem com o caos da civilização urbanoide, a luta de classes, a poluição e as injustiças sociais.

The musical project was matured and intensified assuming new shapes along the search for beats and swings from Jamaican and Brazilian styles, among others. Genres like the capoeira and samba, blues, jazz, country and afrobeat were mixed with different styles of the reggae music thus creating the continuous search for the original sounds of ButiaDub. The poetry conception of the lyrics was also carefully developed becoming a mosaic of sensorial experiences opposing the life among the forest and its wild beauty to the chaotic urban civilization, the class struggle, the pollution and the social injustices.

Com doze anos de atividades e um trabalho de composição vigoroso na bagagem, em 2018 a banda lançou seu primeiro EP #1 contendo seis faixas, incluindo a trilha sonora do documentário 'O Ser Juçara', canções que trazem reverências aos mestres do ritmo jamaicano. A banda celebra agora a parceria com o cantor maranhense José Punho Forte Rodrigues através do lançamento da música "Agora Bem + Que Antes", e a gravação do seu segundo EP a caminho, com mensagem de amor a favor da diversidade e da conservação ambiental!

With twelve years of activity and a vigorous work composition in the background, in 2018 the band released its first EP #1 containing six tracks, including the soundtrack of the documentary 'O Ser Juçara', songs that brings references to different masters of the Jamaican rhythms. Today the band celebrates a partnership with reggae singer José Punho Forte Rodrigues from São Luís do Maranhão with the release of the song 'Agora Bem + Que Antes' and the recording of the second EP on the way, with a message of love in favor of the diversity and environmental conservation.

O grupo atual é formado por sete integrantes, seis biólogos e um geólogo, que dividem sua atuação como músicos, pesquisadores da biodiversidade brasileira e a produção agroecológica de alimentos. 

The current group is formed by seven members, six biologists and one geologist, who works as musicians, researchers of the Brazilian biodiversity and agroecological farming.

Em Estúdio - Espaço Mato Dentro e Estúdio Selva

A ButiaDub divide suas atividades musicais de ensaios, gravações, mixagens e masterizações entre os estúdios Mato Dentro e Selva. "Mato Dentro” é uma área natural de Mata Atlântica bem conservada localizada no município de Maquiné, litoral norte do Rio Grande do Sul. O espaço funciona como um laboratório vivo multifuncional reunindo inúmeras atividades tais como a bioconstrução, estúdio musical, atelier e um imenso jardim agroflorestal de produção de alimentos ecológicos.

Dentre os principais resultados das experiências no Mato Dentro citamos a co-produção do documentário “O Ser Juçara” realizado em parceria com o Coletivo Catarse e a Associação Içara (2016/2018). O filme de 3 episódios retrata as redes de valores relacionadas com o uso sustentável da palmeira Juçara, o açaí da mata atlântica, tendo parte das filmagens sido realizadas no Mato Dentro. A trilha sonora do documentário, assim como boa parte do EP “ButiaDub #1” também foi produzido e gravado no Mato Dentro de forma autônoma pela banda.

O Estúdio "Selva" funciona em um casarão histórico localizado na região do quarto distrito de Porto Alegre, um conjunto de bairros industriais que vem sendo revitalizado pela prefeitura e a população com iniciativas gastronômicas e culturais para a cidade. O projeto futuro do grupo inclui a diversificação de seus produtos e atividades, buscando ampliar a oferta de serviços de estúdio à outras grupos, músicos, e pessoas em geral, incluindo estúdio para ensaios, gravações e de produção musical.

In Studio - Mato Dentro Workshop and Estúdio Selva

ButiaDub divides its musical activities of rehearsals, recordings, mixes and masterings between the studios Mato Dentro and Balaio Sonoro. 'Mato Dentro' is a well conserved area of Atlantic Rainforest located in the Maquiné municipality, north coast of the Rio Grande do Sul State. This space act as a living multifunctional laboratory gathering many independent activities such as natural building, music studio, workshop and an enormous agroforestry gardening for ecological food production.

As some of the main products resulting from the Mato Dentro experiences we cite the co-production of the documentary ‘O Ser Juçara’ developed in partnership with Coletivo Catarse and Associação Içara (2016/2018). The 3-episode film documentary presents different aspects of the value webs related to the sustainable use of the Juçara palm, the açaí of Atlantic Forest, part of which was filmed in Mato Dentro. The soundtrack of the documentary, as also a great part of the sound material used for the EP ‘ButiaDub #1’ was created and recorded in Mato Dentro in a home studio form.

The 'Selva' Studio works in a historic house located in the fourth district of the capital Porto Alegre, a set of industrial boroughs which has been revitalized by politicians and the population with gastronomic and cultural initiatives for the city. The future project of the band includes the diversification of products and activities seeking to extend the offer of studio services to other groups, musicians, and people in general, including studio for rehearsals, recordings and music production.

Nossa Música e Nosso Show

Os shows da banda remetem o público aos salões de dança das festas SoundSystem, onde existe proximidade com os artistas e é permitido dançar ao som de diferentes estilos, do ska ao rocksteady, do reggae roots ao dancehall. As bases e melodias das guitarras e teclas marcam o suingue das músicas, se alternando com o casamento rítmico das baixas frequências comandadas pelo baixo e a bateria. Os vocais e os tambores são a comunicação com a poesia da banda, e trazem em sua atitude os elementos da vida que pulsa da natureza com sua força sonora simples e direta. A mensagem das letras versam sobre um projeto coletivo de produção musical/cultural independente ligadas a um modo de vida. As apresentações ocorrem em diferentes espaços de cultura popular urbanos e rurais, sejam bares, teatros, pontos de cultura, comunidades, feiras de trocas, festivais e espaços públicos em geral. Para além de uma banda, hoje a ButiaDub se compreende como uma verdadeira comunidade de diferentes intenções sociais, culturais, musicais. Vem com a gente viver essa festa de sons!

Our Music and Our Show

 The band performances refer the audiences to the ballroom dances of the Soundsystem parties, where there is proximity to the artists and it is allowed to dance to the different music styles, from ska to rocksteady, from reggae roots to the dancehall. Bases and melodies of the guitars and keyboards creates the musical swing, alternating with the rhythmic marriage of the lower frequencies coming up from the drum and bass. Vocals and percussions are the link communication with the poetry heart of the band bringing in its lyrics and message the attitude of a  pulsating natural way of life with its simple and direct sound strength. The gigs occur in different urban and rural places including pubs, theaters, culture spots, communities, fair trades, festivals and public spaces in general. As more than a band, ButiaDub is nowadays a community of social, cultural and musical intentions. Come with us to live that party of sounds!
